Will STEAM Really Help Your Child?

Over the course of time, technology has, and will undoubtedly continue to, completely transform the world in various ways. From transport to communication, it often feels a bit overwhelming to try and keep up with all of the latest gadgets designed to help improve the quality and conveniences of our lives. With every new invention comes the possibility of the need for a new skillset or at the very least, an adaptation of an existing one. At the rate that technology develops, there may be new jobs that require skills we’ve not even heard of yet, all within the next few years. What is STEAM?

STEAM stands for Science Technology Engineering Art and Mathematics. It’s a bit of a step away from STEM education, which neglected to include art as part of its focus. At the crux of it all, STEAM education takes a holistic approach and is designed to provide children with a different perspective for the 21st Century. By introducing an aspect of creativity, STEAM students are exposed to a new way of thinking and approaching projects – a perfect premise for the ever-changing learning environments school children are faced with.

Give your child a better perspective

In the face of an unpredictable and exciting global economy, being able to combine soft, creative skills with hard skills such as engineering will really set your child up to stand out from the rest. With a STEAM education, particularly from a young age, your little one, kid or tween will be able to broaden their horizons with new perspectives that have been shaped by a unique exposure to the creative process. This also allows for them to be able to find their stronger areas, as well as those that need more attention and will help them direct their focus accordingly. Undoubtedly, when it comes to tertiary education and then inevitably, navigating through the job market, they will be better-equipped than their counterparts who may not have been exposed to a STEAM way of thinking.

Ensure they’re better prepared for the future

Most STEAM-based learning involves hands-on, practical activities and scenarios. Whenever students engage in such activities, they have a learning experience that encourages them to ask questions, as well as come to find the answers to these questions. By applying what they learn, STEAM students are likely to be better-prepared to solve problems creatively. There is also an improved chance of them being able to find multiple solutions, instead of looking for just one answer, as is the case with learning options that focus solely on hard skills, like science and technology.

With new value being placed on the arts, children would be shown a disservice to miss out on STEAM education, as it helps adequately prepare them for whatever the future may hold. While we may not be able to tell where the demand will lie for different jobs, or even what those jobs may be, we can certainly help prepare our children as much as possible for the ever-changing educational landscapes.
